As a lifelong resident of northern New Hampshire, I have fished the rivers and streams in and around the White Mountains National Forest since childhood. Here in New Hampshire’s Great North Woods, the streams run cold and crystal clear, tumbling out of the mountains through hardwood and evergreen forests. In these streams the native fish is the brook trout, beautiful in its speckled camouflaged suit and almost always hungry. Here a few well tied flies, a minimum of gear, and a fondness for solitude are all that is needed to enjoy a day fly fishing on one of the many beautiful little streams this area has to offer. This area is blessed with a good variety of rivers and streams both large and small. In the larger rivers such as the Ammonoosuc and the Androscoggin you will also find rainbows, browns, smallmouth bass, and in certain places landlocked salmon.
As kids, my brother and I could be found fishing or brook trout with our father and sometimes our grandmother in the little streams near our grandparents’ home. Fishing back then meant using worms (we dug our own in those days) and spinners or bobbers, wicker creels, “Old Woodsman" fly dope, and wading in an old pair of sneakers. I got into fly fishing as a teen back in the 70s and today spend the majority of my fishing time casting flies on the rivers and streams here in New Hampshire and Maine. Having three sons spread out across the country has giving me the opportunity to also fish in places such as Montana, Wyoming and Alaska. I also try to spend a few weekends on the coast of Maine fly fishing for striped bass every year.
I have written articles for one of our local outdoor publications and have had some of my flies placed in major magazines. One of my ”Dan’s Dragon” bass bugs was pictured on the cover of Fly Tyer magazine in 2005.
I have been tying flies for well over twenty years. What started as a hobby, is now a lifelong endeavor, and has evolved into a small business. Several years ago I started Dan's Fly Shop, a web based business, selling flies from my home. I also sell flies to local businesses here in New Hampshire. I personally tie every fly and offer a combination of well-known patterns and flies of my own design. I am pleased to now be involved with MyFlies and the flies I offer here are all of my own designs, developed through experience, experimenting at the vise, and testing on the water. I am very fussy with my tying and feel that a well tied fly should not only look and fish well, but must also hold up well. I believe a good fly should be tough enough to catch more than one fish.
One of my favorite parts of this business is talking to folks about the flies and the great fly fishing here in northern New Hampshire. Feel free to email or call with any questions or comments.
Thank you for your interest in my flies and good luck on the water.
~ Dan
