Jim Ferguson - Tier | Presenter

Jim Ferguson

Jim Ferguson became a fly fisherman when his grandfather gave him a bamboo rod at 12 years of age. He became a fly tier the same year when a friend that was all thumbs gave him a Herter’s fly tying kit and told him, “If you learn to tie flies, we will take you fishing.” His fly tying has not stopped for over 50 years. The pursuit of his hobby has become a passion and developed into an art form. Being a retired teacher has helped him organize and teach many different fly tying classes.

Jim is an exceptional tyer with a talent for tying Trout flies, especially Caddis patterns, Classic Atlantic Salmon patterns, Hairwing Replacements for feather wing Atlantic Salmon patterns and historical fly patterns. He has been invited to demonstrate his tying abilities at various Conclaves and Expos throughout the Northwest and has a special interest in and is known for his stunning Classic Atlantic Salmon fly plates (which are available through MyFlies.com). Jim teaches Salmon Fly tying classes at Creekside Flyfishing Shop in Salem, Oregon.

Jim has written a number of short instructional tying booklets and has received numerous national and international tying awards. He is a member of the Northwest Atlantic Salmon Fly tying Guild and serves on the Board of Governors of the Fly Tying Group (FFF subgroup.) When Jim’s not at the bench, you can find him on his home waters: North Fork of the Santiam, Metolius River, Deschutes River around Maupin and East Lake.

Beginners to advanced tiers, appreciate Jim’s easy-going, organized style of teaching. He is available for trout, steelhead or Atlantic salmon tying workshops or presentations.
