Description: The Black Magic fly was designed to entice the selective rainbows on the Railroad Ranch located on the Henry's Fork. The success rate was so high there, that I now fish this fly on any water that has black midges or any other black insect that it closely represents.
What it imitates: Black Midge (cripple, stillborn, or drowned as well as pupa-depends on how you fish it)
When to fish it: When midges are hatching
Where to fish it: Any trout waters that have a significant midge population
How to fish it: I will use the Black Magic as a trailer from a dry fly. The trailer should be 16 to 20 in. Adjust the depth until you begin to get hook-ups.
