Description: Bruce's Old Standby is named after a good friend of mine who handed me one a long time ago and asked if I could tie some up for him. He said it was a favorite pattern but, that he couldn't find them anymore. It has since become a favorite fly of mine as well as a lot of other folks. It's just one of those patterns that has everything you want in a small streamer. This is an outstanding fly for brook trout and rainbows in streams and ponds.
Never leave home without one; you'll be glad you have some in your fly box !
What it imitates: Sculpin or other small bait fish, can also suggest a grasshopper or stone fly. This is a very versatile pattern.
When to fish it: Any time
Where to fish it: Bruce used this fly with great success on trout ponds in Maine. I have used it extensively in small clear streams and larger rivers here in New Hampshire for brook trout and rainbows. I have also used this fly in Yellowstone Park on the Gibbon river with good results.
How to fish it:
- To fish this pattern as a streamer, simply cast across and down, let the fly swing down in the current then strip back
- To fish it as a dry; suggesting a hopper or stone fly, dead drift this fly up and across giving it just a slight twitch to imply a struggling insect, mend line as needed
- The same basic methods can be used on a pond but without the aid of current
Approximate time to complete this order: 5 days
