Description: Soft Hackles are making their way back into anglers fly boxes and for good reason; they are easy to fish and very effective, especially right after a hatch or when there is no surface activity. Ask anyone that fishes them regularly, and if the truth be told . . . it’s almost like cheating. Cast....swing...big hit...fish on! To match the caddis hatch in your area, the Budding Caddis is being offered in 4 different colors and 3 different hook sizes.
NOTE: The entire Budding Caddis Soft Hackles series has been picked up by Umpqua Feather Merchants and will appear in their 2012 catalog! No need to wait, order yours now!
What it imitates: Soft Hackles suggest everything from emerging mayflies to caddis pupae or egg-laying caddis. The Budding Caddis is designed to represent a caddis emerger.
When to fish it: They can be effective when there is no hatch in progress, right after a hatch or during a hatch when fish are feeding subsurface.
Where to fish it: They are particularly productive on caddis-rich rivers.
How to fish it: A floating line and wet-fly-swing is a very productive method. Quarter your cast downstream, throw in an upstream mend to slow the fly, and let it swing. When the fly is straight below you, let it hang for a few seconds. Then cast again with about three more feet of line. Keep doing this until you're at the limit of your casting, then walk downstream 30 feet and do it all again. Upstream to rising fish or trailed behind an adult caddis.
