Description: Often times, during migration to shore, stoneflies are taken by the current and sent downstream, making them an easy food source for hungry trout. The Chain Gang Stonefly brings the familiar and successful thorax design with a new chain abdomen. The result is a fly that sinks quickly, travels quickly through the water and causes fish to strike it hard. It's a roughneck fly for roughneck trout!
The Chain Gang Stonefly won first place in the 2010 Feather-Craft Fly Tying Contest!
What it imitates: Black Stonefly nymph
When to fish it: Whenever you begin to see a stonefly hatch
Where to fish it: Freestone rivers and streams, spring fed lakes and ponds
How to fish it: You can fish this in the riffles and be just as confident working it slowly across the bottom of a deep, quiet pool. When the black stoneflies are coming off, swing this down stream and towards shore, just like the naturals making their way to emerge. This is also an excellent pocket water "prospecting" fly. Try using this as the bottom fly on a Czech rig and hold on! This fly is destined to replace all of the other "prospecting" nymphs in your box.
