Description: The Chinook is a very popular smelt pattern in and around the Maine area and is deadly on BIG Atlantic Salmon. My intentions when designing this fly were to make a very rich looking pattern that was cost effective effective to fish (allowing one to fish guilt free) and to have it catch fish. It scores a 10 in both areas.
What it imitates: Smelt and other various baitfish
When to fish it: Early season, when the smelt runs are on or when young fry are hatching
Where to fish it: Early in the season on lakes. Fish these streamers on or near the surface. In the rivers when the waters are running high, pocket water is where you will want to concentrate,
How to fish it: Cast, allow fly to settle then start striping. Vary your strip length to make the fly appear to be in a fear or fight mode. Big trout and salmon find wounded or fleeing prey easy targets! If you're fishing a tailwater, when fish get washed thru a dam they become dazed and confused, so a dead drift can also be very effective.
Approximate time to complete this order: 7-10 days
