Description: There is something special about working a bass bug along the shore line of a quite pond or river on a warm summer evening. Seeing a big small mouth bass explode onto the surface after your popper is one of the most exiting fishing experiences you can have in fresh water. I designed Dan's Dragon popper for catching smallies but we have also caught large mouth bass, pickerel, perch, fall fish, and striped bass, in fact, my first ever striped bass was caught with a gray Dan's Dragon . These poppers are easy to cast because they don't "drag" too much air like some of the bigger patterns do. I tie all dragons with a weed guard so you can get into those thick cover areas some warm water species like to hang out in. Whether your a seasoned warm water fly angler or you are someone who wants to give it a try, Dan's Dragon poppers can add a lot of excitement as well as enjoyment to your fishing. WARNING - this type of fishing can be addictive.
Requests for a different hook size and custom colors are welcomed! Please indicate your preference at the time of ordering.
What it imitates: Dragon fly, small frogs, possibly small mammals struggling on the water
When to fish it: Any time you can, but does especially well from early summer to late fall
Where to fish it: Ponds, lakes, rivers where flow is slow to moderate
How to fish it: Simply cast the fly to likely cover such as shore line bushes, weed beds, drop off's etc... Let popper sit for a few moments before moving. Give it just very slight twitches to move the legs (they will do the breast stroke! ), or give the line some harder jerks to make it pop, really stirring things up. Try different methods, you can't fish this popper wrong! I recommend a weight forward floating line with a bass bug taper on six to eight weight rods.
