Description: The Featherwing Fishhead is a deadly fly for Striped Bass and I have used it very successfully for Lake Trout, Northern Pike and freshwater bass. This is one of Jack Gartside's innovations in fly tying and can be tied in a wide range of color combinations and sizes. On the North Shore, I like an all white version as well as a fly using grizzly saddles. I use this fly on flats and estuaries in a wide range of sizes. A great all-around striper fly!
What it imitates: Baitfish
When to fish it: Throughout the season
Where to fish it: Flats, estuaries, rocky shores- this is an all-around fish-taker
How to fish it: I usually fish this on flats and estuaries with a floating line and use short strips and drift with the current. This fly can also be weighted and used with an intermediate or sinking line to get down deeper.
