Description: The H+F is a great little hopper pattern that I have had great success with in the cold clear streams of New Hampshire's north country. The H+F Hopper is a combination of natural and synthetic materials and is quite durable. I have incorporated the foam into the wing and the head of this fly which allows it to float on or near the surface indefinitely. This is my favorite hopper pattern for Wild River in the White Mt. National Forest here in New Hampshire. The H+F Hopper can also be used to imitate stone flies.
What it imitates: Hoppers and Stone flies ( salmon flies )
When to fish it: As soon as the weather warms up and you see hoppers around or when you see stone flies
Where to fish it:
- Mid-size and larger freestone rivers and streams, tailwaters
- Wild River flows out of the White Mts of New Hampshire and empties into the Androscoggin in Maine, this is a crystal clear free stone, mid-sized river with a lot of nice pools that hold brook trout and rainbows, both species like this little hopper
- The H+F Hopper is worthy of a try on any similar river through out the country.
How to fish it: I like to cast this fly across and up to head of a pool and let it drift down with just a slight twitch or two. Or cast it toward a grassy bank where hoppers can naturally end up in the water. If a trout comes up to investigate but doesn't take, just let the fly finish its drift and try again, you just may be rewarded for your patience and persistence.
