Tier's Note: Hellgrammites are the larva form of the Dobsonfly. They have to be one of the creepiest critters in freshwater.
It's a good thing they only grow to about 3 inches in length . They use their armored jaws to snack on their favorite food, Caddis Larva. I think I would pay $20 bucks to watch someone turn over a rock and grab one of these little monsters for the first time!!! The next few seconds would be PRICELESS !
This fly has semi transparent plates along it's entire length. They are tied in from the top and bottom to form the individual abdominal sections . Each plate is hand made out of acrylic and slightly larger the the one before it to give a realistic tapper to the fly.
Mounted in a realistic river bottom setting and tied on an Orvis #4 swimming nymph hook. The glass dome measures 4" x 4".
