Description: LaPointe's Stone is designed to imitate large stone flies. The two main ingredients in this pattern are deer hair and closed cell foam, giving it great flotation. I added the white calf tail on top of the wing to help the fisher person see the fly in the fast riffles where you generally find stone flies. As with most stone fly patterns, this fly can be tied in different colors and can be used to imitate a hopper. When the trout are not paying attention to your more traditional stone fly patterns try a LaPointe's Stone.
NOTE: Custom colors orders are welcomed! Please indicate the colors you would like at the time of ordering.
What it imitates: Large stone flies ( salmon flies ) grass hoppers
When to fish it: Northern New Hampshire - Mid to late June - early fall. For other areas around the country, when you see stone flies on the water
Where to fish it: For imitating stone flies, fish this fly in the fast water or in pools below a fast stretch of water. To use as a hopper, I like to cast this fly close to a grassy shore line. Fish this fly where ever you see large stone flies or an abundance of grass hoppers.
How to fish it: This is not your traditional little delicate dry fly, be bold with this fly. Don't be afraid to let this fly slap the water, remember, your trying to impersonate a large struggling insect. Give this fly some twitches to ring the dinner bell of those large trout.
