Description: There is a river in Maine that is called the Mousam River It holds huge Browns, Sea Run Browns and big Brookies. Every one I know that fishes it swears, that if you don't have Olive and Black you are wasting your time. I think its because of the Black Nosed Dace. If I had only one fly that I was aloud to use on this river, it would be this one.
TIER'S NOTE: I tie this fly in two versions; Feather Wing and Hair Wing. I am very particular about the materials I tie with and use only the highest quality I can find for the type of fly I am tying.
What it imitates: Black Nosed Dace, baby Chubs, Suckers, and Sculpin
When to fish it: When fry are spawning, the BIG guys are looking for a "full meal" and this fly gets their attention.
Where to fish: Rivers and Lakes.
How to fish it:
- In rivers, I fish this fly close to the bottom and if the river is deep and fast I use a sinking line along with split shot ensure I get down deep.
- In lakes, I fish the fly close to the weed beds and close to shore. I find this fly most productive early mornings and late evenings with a lot of striping action. Varying the length and quickness of the strip. The goal is to get it to mimic a wounded or fleeing bait fish.
Approximate time to complete this order: 7-10 days
