Description: Zonker patterns are irresistable to fish; the rabbit strip and Whiting Spey hackle provides the motion needed to bring this pattern to life. The tungsten cone head gets this fly down quickly. The old adage, "Big fly for big fish" makes sense when using the Wing Zonker, that's why if I know there are big fish around, I tie a Wing Zonker on! The colors I use most are: Wine & Claret, Olive & Brown, Chartreuse & White. These colors consistantly catch the most fish whether its trout, steelhead, small mouth bass or stripers. I use a stout 4x, Daiichi 2220 hook that hangs on to those BIG ones! Norm's Wing Zonker is featured in the current issue of Eastern Fly Fishing magazine (page 62)- Click here to read
What it imitates: Minnows or baitfish, which are commonly eaten by predacious trout and smallmouth bass.
When to fish it: Any time of the year, but especially when there are BIG fish around.
Where to fish it: Just about any water that holds fish and you can cast a fly. For lakes, I recommend hook size #4 and #6. In rivers I like to use #2, #4, #6.
How to fish it: Fish down and across, swinging the fly in the traditional manner while using a strip retrieve to "enliven" the fly. Between line strips, this pattern dips like a jig, the perfect motion that triggers strikes.
Turnaround time to complete order: 7 days
