Description: When I fish chironomids, I use my Wonder Midge Trio as follows; Red & Silver for the larva stage, Black & Green covers the pupae stage and Norm's Turkey Midge is a direct hit for the emerging stage. The Wonder Trio works on any lake that has chrinomids hatching. Because each fly, in the Wonder Trio, is distinctly different, you can easily cover the days hatch.
Silver & Red Wonder: For the larva stage. The red Gamakatsu hook and the red body wrap show up well and make the fish take notice; the silver rib adds a glisten that makes it look alive. The peacock abdomen and white ostrich thorax give it the look of braking out of its shuck and the red tungsten bead helps get it down without the use of split shot and doubles as an attractor.
Black & Green Wonder: Covers the pupae stage. The body wrap material is a thin rubber product called Wonder Wrap by Montana Fly Co. The tungsten bead gets it down quick and fish key on the bright green.
Norm'sTurkey Wonder: Nails it during the emerging stage of the chironomid. Turkey feather for the body wrap give it the look of turning toward the adult stage. I give it a few pheasant tail fibers to form of the emerging insect. I use a gold tungsten bead to get it down quick. This Wonder Midge Trio has you covered when fishing chironomids on any lake or tailwater, you can even use them on rivers with good results.
What it imitates: Chironomids, Blood worms
When to fish it: Anytime you see a few midges flying about, usually best around mid-afternoon
Where to fish it: Lakes, tailwaters, dread drifted in rivers.
How to fish it: Start with the Silver & Red Wonder by itself under a strike indicator – lately, I like the brand called Fish Pimp (Hareline Dubbing carries them). First go-around, I set the indicator so the fly is about a foot off the bottom; no results, I shorten the distance a bit. If the fish are being picky I might add the Black & Green as a second fly; up from the bottom midge about 18 inches Sometimes I fish Norm's Turkey Midge with no indicator just a floating line, a long 12’ leader and add some tippet and fish this pattern right below the surface.
