Tier's Note: This fly plate is a beautiful framed reproduction of artist Dr. Edgar Burke's Wet Fly Color Plate Painting No. 1 from Trout (1938) by Ray Bergman. Each fly is meticulously reproduced and accurately tied according to the traditional and historic recipes recorded in Trout by none other than Don Bastian.
Plate No. 1 - 42 traditional wet fly patterns from Abbey to Bostwick.
Hook Type and Size: Traditional Mustad 3399 #6 sproat bend standard wet fly hook. (Not the new generation of Mustad hooks made in China, I use the historic style hooks made in Norway). The supply of these vintage hooks is limited.
Mounting:
My fly mounting method is proprietary. I use a section of fine wire during the tying of each pattern, tying it in place which allows the fly to be securely mounted and suspended off the mat in a three-dimensional method. Even upon close examination, this mounting method is basically invisible. Consequently, each fly and the entire frame is not visibly cluttered with the usual pegs, pins, and wire often employed by other artists to mount flies.
The flies are undamaged because no glue, cement, or epoxy is used. As a result, nothing distracts from the view of each fly or the overall image of the frame. Each fly pattern name is hand-lettered by me, and each plate is labeled in block printing by me using a number two pencil.
Framing: This is a museum quality piece, solid wood walnut finish frame with UV Conservation Glass to protect against ultraviolet light degradation. Acid-free materials used throughout. Ivory/cream color mat board backing bordered by black-blackcore mat. Sides of interior display area are also boxed in with mat board strips. Back of frame Kraft sealed with hanging wire and foam bumpers. Ready for display on the wall of your home or office.
