Tiers Note: I spent several years fishing the Long Island Sound as a kid using live sandworms for bait. They came in a wax coated white cardboard bait box packed in sea weed. I was only 8 years old and grabbing a 12 inch worm with big black fangs shooting in and out of its head was just too much to take. I had to cut off the first inches or so of the head before I could grab one. The jaws had to go!!! After tying realistics for a few years, I was in search of an idea for a new pattern. I saw a Dirty Jobs episode with Mike Roe digging up sandworms by hand on the mud flats of Maine; laughed my butt off when the worms started pinching his fingers. Right then and there, I knew that the Sandworm was going to be my next Critter. This woven pattern is my version of one of the varmints.
The Sandworm is about 5' long, is mounted on a marine bottom setting; is tied on a # 4 Orvis Swimming Nymph Hook and is covered by an attractive 5 1/2' x 8" glass dome.
