Description: The Skate'n Fool is a dry fly or skater used for taking steelhead or salmon on the surface. I developed this pattern for BC steelhead, but it works well on surface oriented fish. The Fool is pretty much the only fly I skate anymore as it has accounted for more of my "dry fly steelhead" than any other pattern. Skates well in all conditions and is fairly easy to see. Personally, I've never swung it over an Atlantic Salmon, but I'm sure they would fall for it. The Skate'n Fool is deadly on the Bulkley, Deschutes and North Umpqua.
Steelhead are too noble a fish to be caught with an ugly fly....
What it imitates: Nothing...but fish take it. Not sure what they are thinking, just glad they like it.
When to fish it: I'll fish it anytime. On the Bulkley, I'll fish it all day if the water temps are right. On the Deschutes, I have more faith in it during the evening hours.
Where to fish it: Any river where steelhead or salmon look up...
How to fish it: On a surface swing; tight line. The fly leaves a wake just like a water skier drawing the fish to the surface. I like to change up the speed of the swing depending on the water I'm fishing by mending my floating line. This is where experience helps. If you've never tried catching a steelhead on the surface, give it a try...it really is a lot of fun and gets your heart pumping when you see the take! Once you've tried it and hooked one, you won't be able to stop thinking about it. It is truly an awesome experience! Have faith in yourself and stick with it.
