Tier's Note: I grew up on Long Island. My Pop was an "Old Salt" and loved saltwater fishing. When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I used to break his chops to take me with him night fishing for Blue Fish. He knew I would never make it staying up all night but he took me anyway. I have several fond memories of those trips, and a couple would guide me in my beginnings as a realistic tier. One of those memories was the huge schools of squid that would shoot in and out around the boat's lights. The other “fond” memory was the pieces of squid that landed on you whenever a gaffed Blue shook his head. I was amazed at how much squid a single fish could consume. Those two memories alone would become my inspiration in developing the Softex Squid. After several attempts at making a “realistic looking” squid, I hit on the right technique and materials. The squid I make has a hollow body that is almost weightless and pops right back into shape when it is either bent or crushed. I sell it as a collectable but just ad water and the Marabou come to life. It looks like the fly might squirt ink on you any second.
The Softex Squid was my first attempt at a realistic fly. Sring 2005, it was published in Fly Tyer Magazine and met with great reviews… I was hooked on realistic fly tying.
The Softex Squid is about 5' long and comes mounted in a realistic underwater setting with an attractive 5 1/2' x 8" glass dome. Its tied on a Mustad S.S. 3/0 Saltwater hook.
