Description: Like most avid Chinook anglers, I have many patterns, but the Chartreuse Striker is my most productive fly that covers everyday needs and is consistently productive. I intentionally use the Gamakatsu T10-6H Salmon hook for is sharpness and stoutness. I use Mink zonker strip for the tail with a few stands of Harelines Baitfish Emulator Flash to give movement, color and flash to the fly. The holographic red eyes stand out and help to elicit a "strike" from the fish...hence the name "Striker". The head is coated with Tuffleye Finish to give it a shine and helps the eyes glisten in the water. The body is made up of wrapped Enrico Puglisi short fiber streamer brush. The short fiber brush, being made on a wire, adds weight evenly to the fly.
What it imitates: Baitfish
When to fish it: Fall Chinook run or Mid-July to December in the lower tidewaters
Where to fish it: Western Coastal Tidewaters and Bays, also excellet in sea run rivers
How to fish it: Use medium to long length leader with stout tippet. I like to build the leaders with fluorocarbon mono, starting with about 30lbs stepping down to 25lbs then 15lbs and lastly fluorocarbon tippet ranging from 12 to 8 lbs. In clear water, you may have to go down to 8lb tippet, but normally I like to keep it at 12 lbs. In Tidewaters, I like using a shooting head from a Type 2 to Type 6 depending on where I'm fishing. With loops tied on the ends of the shooting heads, I can change over quickly depending on conditions and water depth. In rivers, I like to use a line with a sink-tip about 12ft, Type 5 or 6; 8 foot leader and 24 inches of tippet. In tidewaters, it's more of a cast and strip method; letting the line and fly sink and swing through the current. In rivers, it's more of the traditional "swing" method. Although, a lot of fish are hooked while stripping line back.
