Description: The Summerberry accounted for my first North Umpqua steelhead several years ago and has been fooling fish ever since from southern Oregon to British Columbia. It gets its name from a pie served at the world famous Steamboat Inn. The Summerberry is a mix of the materials I use on the flies that make up my Peacock series, while summerberry pie is a mix of all the berries of summer. The name fits nicely and fish love the recipe.
I tie the Summerberry, and most of my steelhead flies, on a Daichii 2151, size 2 hook. By using a straight eye hook, the fly can be fished with a loop knot adding to its movement in the water.
This is one of my original patterns featured in Lani Waller's "A Steelheader's Way".
Steelhead are too noble a fish to be caught with an ugly fly....
